Can’t give up that sugary goodness?
It is well know that over consuming refined sugars can lead to a number of serious health complication such as heart disease, diabetes obesity and some cancers. However, sugar is also highly addictive and many of us find it difficult to get our hands off the stuff.
It’s easy to loose track of how much sugar you consume, so becoming more aware of what you’re putting in your body is important. Below are some alternative sources of sugar to consider.
Raw Honey

A classic ‘goto’ natural source of sweetness, made up of about 80% sugar . Not only does raw honey come with that natural sweetness but comes with a number of health benefits also. Honey is also well know for its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.
Stevia
Stevia is one of the healthiest sugar alternative. Stevia is extracted from South American plan known as Stevia rebaudiana and is 100% natural. It contains no calories and is commonly used by people who are restricted to a low calorie or low sugar diet.
Stevia is a lot sweeter than sugar, so when using Stevia be careful not to slip in too much. As a guide, 1 teaspoon is equivalent to around 1 cup.
Dates
Dates are exceptional for adding sweetness to both cooked and raw foods. You can easy make date paste at home in a blender and use in baking recipes. Alternatively, if raw cocoa bar snacks are more your thing, I have added a great basic recipe below. Use your imagination from there and make your own variations.
Xylitol (Birch Sugar)
Xylitol is extracted from corn or birch wood and is also found in many fruits and vegetables. It contains less calories than sugar (around 40%). Some of the benefits to Xylitol is that it does not raise blood sugar or insulin levels and can also improve dental health, reducing the risk of tooth delay.
Xyliot is safe to consume, however be careful not to over do it. Excessive consumption can cause you to have diarrhoea, bloating and painful gas. If you have dogs, keep it way! Xyliol is highly toxic to you puppy.
