An Introduction to Milk Alternatives

There is no doubt that milk plays an important part in life. Mammals feed their young using milk they produce themselves which supports the healthy development of their offspring.

Some people believe, however, that the consumption of milk from other mammals is unnatural, unnecessary and maybe even unhealthy. So what are some non-dairy alternatives to cows milk?

Consideration for Choosing a Non-Dairy Alternative

There are some considerations to make when choosing an alternative to cow’s milk, having a well-balanced diet is important and knowing what you put in your body is key.

Sugar – Sugar is often added to non-dairy milk alternatives to enhance the flavor and texture.

Calcium – Cow’s milk is a good source of calcium, however, some alternatives don’t naturally contain this.

Allergies – Some people are allergic and intolerant to gluten, nuts, and soy. If you have allergies, check the labels carefully.

Cost – Many milk alternatives are more expensive than standard cows milk. There are ways to make milk alternatives at home, however, consider that homemade milk alternatives won’t be fortified with calcium and other vitamins like the ones you purchase on the shelf.

Soy Milk

One of the most popular milk alternatives, soy milk is extracted from soybeans and is sold on shelves in various flavors. Soy milk is a good non-dairy alternative when looking for an alternative that is ‘like-for-like’. Soy milk is not exactly the same as cows milk, but one of the closest when it comes to non-dairy alternatives. Important to note, however, some studies have shown that it may negatively impact fertility in men.

Almond Milk

Almond milk is made of ground almonds, water, and sweeteners. Almonds are a great source of vitamin E, with a couple of glasses of almond milk a day you can reach the recommended daily intake. One of the downsides though is its protein content. Almond milk contains much less protein than soy or dairy milk.

Hemp Milk

Hemp Milk, made from hemp seeds, water, and sweeteners, maybe a good choice for those that want to avoid dairy milk and have soy/nut or gluten allergies. High in Iron and omega-3 Fatty acids, Hemp milk may also support heart and brain health. Hemp milk is however low in calcium and usually quite expensive, relative to other options. Oh, and no… you won’t get high from drinking hemp milk.

Other Milk Alternatives

There are many milk alternatives commercially available these days. The milk alternatives that are readily available will vary depending on where you live and where you shop. Check the shelves at your supermarket to see what alternatives you have available and do your research before deciding what the best non-dairy milk alternative is for you.
