Ever heard of losing weight and improving digestion with food pairing? Well, over the last few years it has become a little bit of a phenomenon and continues to gain momentum online.
The principle of food pairing isn’t to restrict what you eat but to focus on combining certain foods that digest better than other combinations to improve gut health, digestion, and to lose weight by optimizing digestion to be as fast and efficient as possible.
Different foods digest differently
Proteins and Carbohydrates both require a different environment to digest. Proteins digest most efficiently in an acidic environment whist an ideal environment for digesting carbs is an alkaline environment. Think about your diet. Most diets regularly combine Proteins and Carbs in a single meal, for example, Steak and Potatoes or a Stir fry with Rice.
When you eat carbs, your body produces alkaline enzymes, and acidic enzymes are called in to take care of proteins. The problem is that when you mix acidic and alkaline solutions together they neutralize, and the same is for these enzymes. That means your body has work harder, using more energy than necessary to digest food which can lead you to feel sluggish or bloated.
In addition to the extra effort required to digest food with certain food pairings, different foods digest at different speeds. Think of a single lane road, you can only drive as fast as the slowest vehicle (assuming you cannot overtake of course). For example, Grains such as rice and oats take approximately 90 minutes to digest, whereas fruit digests in 20 – 30 mins. If you choose to eat fruits immediately after grains, its going to take longer than necessary to digest the fruits.
Now that you understand that different food types digest differently, it may not come as a surprise to know they also digest at different speeds.
…that’s great, what can I do with that information?
